Why did we launch Easy Read News?
A free, trustworthy, and easy-to-read news service is vital because:
- Everyone deserves fair access – no one should miss out because of cost, complexity, or disability.
- Good decisions need good facts – people rely on clear, honest news to understand the world.
- Democracy depends on it – without reliable information, people can’t hold power to account.
- Misinformation spreads without it – bad sources fill the gap when trustworthy news is hard to find.
Plain language and accessibility ensure news works for all people, not just some.
How do we source and fact check news?
- Collecting news – Our system gathers breaking stories from trusted sources like the BBC, Reuters, and government websites.
- AI simplifies the text – Artificial intelligence rewrites the news in short, clear sentences using plain British English.
- Easy Read checks – We make sure that the text follows accessibility rules (like the Accessible Information Standard 2010), using:
- Simple words
- Short sentences
- Clear headings
- No jargon
- Human review – An editor checks every story to ensure it’s accurate, fair, and truly easy to understand.
- Publishing – The final version is shared online in an Easy Read format, so everyone can access important news.
This way, people with learning disabilities, low literacy, or who just prefer simple language get trustworthy news they can understand.
